Testimonials
Our customers’ experiences are our top priority, See what some of our satisfied customers had to say about their experience with Burgin and Brown Conservation of Paintings.
Burgin and Brown does outstanding work. Heather was SO knowledgeable, meticulous, and thorough. I presented her with a VERY challenging job: A set of 200+ year old portraits, which required a high level of expertise and historical problem solving—including correcting issues from an improper restoration that was done over a century ago! She exceeded all expectations, and brought new life into my priceless family heirlooms. I wouldn’t trust anyone else!
Heather Brown did an incredible job restoring a dirty 200 year old oil portrait that had 21 rips in it! I know it now looks as it did that long ago. The professionalism and the care she took is amazing. She photographed all of the restoration stages along the way! She also repaired the very intricate gold leaf coated frame. I am surprised the Smithsonian hasn’t recruited her already!
I brought a late 19th century painting to be cleaned and restored, and couldn’t be happier with the results. The work was executed in a timely fashion and was done very professionally. I would definitely recommend Burgin and Brown conservation, and I will be using them again.
“Never has that light shone more beautifully in my living room.”
Eighty-five years ago, my parents were given a wedding present by a distant cousin who was an accomplished copyist of fine art. Given my father’s taste in painting, something that owed to his education in Europe, the copyist, Angele Kahyan, took two celebrated paintings from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, sought authorization to reproduce them, and designated them as the wedding gift. They were Leon Bonnat’s Roman Girl at a Fountain, and Francesco Guardi’s Fantastic Landscape. Ironically, the Guardi canvas’ shape and dimensions were probably intended for an arched architectural surround of some sort and were far too large to fit in our New York City apartment. So the copyist cleverly isolated the center section of the work, cropped it to a rectangular perspective, and depicted that.
These large and richly hued canvases occupied a place of honor in our family’s home and, with time, fell to my ownership and care. In time, they came to hang in my residence in Florida, and took their place along with a whole gallery of Angele Kahyan’s original still life work. But, after 85 years, it became obvious to me that they required cleaning and conservation.
Given my own career as a Dean of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Tampa, I was well aware of the issues and techniques of conservation in our own studios, teaching, and gallery collection. I had also witnessed conservators at work in Europe, in my own metier as a musician, I had both performed on ancient instruments and done consulting work on the restoration and preservation of historical musical artifacts. I had both high hopes and high standards for the rehabilitation of my two authorized copies from the Met.
I found Heather Brown of Burgin and Brown Conservation of Paintings, and in a single conversation, understood that her approach to her work was precisely what I required for these canvases. I commissioned this restoration work with total confidence.
Nothing disappointed me. Rather, everything merited high praise. From Ms. Brown’s meticulous description of her technique, to her assurance of work done on schedule, to her extraordinary care for the works sent to her studio, nothing was less than first-rate. And, in the end (after but four weeks in process, itself a testament to careful planning and living up to promises), witnessing the vivid colors of these paintings was, in a word, breathtaking. Ms. Brown also restored the paintings’ frames. They now serve as a brilliant lens for that which they surround.
As I sit and gaze at these very special artifacts, I am aware as never before of the truism that great art discloses its form and depth through the depiction of light. Never has that light shone more beautifully in my living room.
Thank you, Burgin and Brown. You are part of the masterful story of these paintings from their beginnings onward!
